SINA.COM (Nasdaq:SINA - News), the leading online media and value-added infotainment service ("VAS") provider for China and for global Chinese communities with a branded network of 15 localized web sites targeting Greater China and overseas Chinese, announced the relocation of worldwide headquarters in Shanghai focusing on opportunities in China.
"The relocation of our worldwide headquarters in Shanghai completes the last milestone of our strategy of dual operations centers in Beijing and Shanghai, three business lines of SINA.com, SINA.net and SOL; and four geographic regions of North, East, South Greater China and International," said Daniel Mao, CEO of SINA. "In the past year, we have seen a rapid rise in business and end users for SINA in both East and South China regions, by relocating our headquarters in Shanghai we can get closer to and better serve our new client and user bases in these regions."
"Since the integration of our Taiwan operations into our East China operations, we have seen a rise in our cross-strait business where we are better able to serve our Taiwan clients on both sides of the Taiwan Strait," said Benjamin Tsiang, General Manager of Greater East China region. "As more and more Taiwan and Hong Kong firms increase their investments in the Shanghai-East China region, our new worldwide operations center in Shanghai will further enhance our ability to follow these companies' business from Hong Kong and Taiwan to China"
Simultaneously, SINA announced the launch of its first city portal in cooperation with Yangzhou TV and Radio Administration marking a milestone in SINA's e-government initiative. This city portal will be the eleventh SINA local portal in the Greater China region and the first one with full support from the relevant local government body.
"Governments at all levels of Yangzhou City are making concerted efforts to integrate all resources to construct a modern Yangzhou by joining hands with efforts from the private sector. These initiatives include ensuring good communication between the government and people via e-government solutions and joining the international economy by presenting the business opportunities of Yangzhou to the world using the Internet," said Xu Liling, Director of Yangzhou TV and Radio Broadcasting Administration. "The cooperation with SINA will leverage Yangzhou's current infrastructures and SINA's advantages in brand, technology and web operation to expand the partnership between governments and enterprises."
"We're very pleased to have been picked by the Yangzhou government to be the official portal for the city. Moving forward, we expect to further cooperate with the Yangzhou government on the integration of online media with local TV and radio as well as the introduction of SINA services into the city's broadband infrastructure," said Daniel Mao, CEO of SINA. "Equally important, we hope the cooperation with the Yangzhou government will serve a model for SINA's e-government initiative in other major cities in China."
SINA also announced that its newly launched short messaging service (SMS) dating service "Mobile Hunter" approaches 200,000 paid members in less than one month of its launch. SINA Mobile Hunter allows users to compete for popularity and meet friends via Short Messaging Service. It is a fee based value-added service provided by SINA.
About SINA
SINA.COM (NASDAQ:SINA - News) is the leading online media and value-added infotainment service ("VAS") provider for China and for global Chinese communities. With a branded network of 15 localized web sites targeting Greater China and overseas Chinese, SINA operates three major business lines including SINA.com (online media and entertainment service), SINA Online (consumer fee-based online and wireless VAS) and SINA.net (Small and medium-sized enterprises VAS), providing an array of services including online portals, premium email, wireless short messaging, virtual ISP, search, classified information, online games, e-commerce, e-learning and enterprise e-solutions.
With 60 million registered users worldwide and over 3 million active paid users for a variety of our fee-based services, SINA is the most recognized Internet brand name in China and among global Chinese.
Our primary focus is in China where we generate 85% of our total revenues. According to the July 2002 survey conducted by the China Internet Network Information Center ("CNNIC"), China currently has 45.8 million active Internet users, the second largest in the World. The same survey demonstrates an average Internet user in China spends about RMB 100 (or US$12) per month on access fees and related services and represents a demographic of Chinese that is well-educated and better-paid compared with the rest of the population. With the current growth rate, China is going to surpass the United States and become the country with the largest Internet user base by 2005. As the number one online media company in China, SINA is expected to benefit directly from this tremendous growth rate as China's economy continues to leap forward.
During the fiscal year ended June 30, 2002, we have successfully transformed SINA from a pure Internet portal relying almost exclusively on online advertising to a company with multiple and sustainable revenue streams.
